Economics Fair @ ASHK
Friday, April 20, 2018

Economics Fairs offer students a unique opportunity to see how the economy works. Students participate by opening individual businesses and either manufacturing items to sell or offering services for sale. Students determine what resources they need for their business to succeed and where they will purchase those resources.

This year our students from grade 3, 4 and 5 hosted the Fair while students from other grades were given play money to shop at the different businesses, choosing which items they would like to spend their money on. \

Thanks to grade 3, 4, and 5 students and their teachers for organizing and hosting this assembly. The Economics Fair was a great success!

At ASHK we seek to inspire our students to run for fitness, good health, stress relief, and to enjoy the great outdoors! To achieve this goal, we have had Cross Country as one of our ECAs since school started.

Cross Country Running is a sport in which teams and individuals run a race on open-air courses over natural terrain such as dirt or grass.

Led by Miss Spring, the training programs are tailored by age groups and a number of ASHK students from grades 3-7 have been training for months. Last week, the team participated in ISSFHK Cross Country Meets, and everyone finished the race.

Wonderful Thanksgiving Family Picnic
Friday, December 1, 2017

Thanks to everyone's support and participation, we had a wonderful Thanksgiving Family Picnic last week. Here is a snapshot of the day's activities.

Thanksgiving Celebration
Thursday, November 23, 2017

On the fourth Thursday of November in the United States, Americans celebrate Thanksgiving. It originated as a harvest festival, but is now the biggest celebration of family and friendships. It was during the American Civil War that President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed it a national holiday. Together with Christmas and the New Year, Thanksgiving is a part of the broader fall/winter holiday season in the U.S.

As an American School, we celebrate Thanksgiving as well. This year, all ASHK parents are invited to pack a picnic lunch and join your child/ren in celebrating Thanksgiving on Thursday, November 23 at 11:30 am.

Parents are invited to stay for the movie that follows the picnic and/or to attend the social for parents which runs simultaneously.

ASHK “Week Without Walls” to Sabah
Wednesday, November 22, 2017

ASHK Middle School students traveled last week with Mr. Cohen and Ms. Nicholas to the Kiulu Valley in Sabah, approximately one hour inland from Kota Kinabalu in Malaysia. ASHK co-sponsored the trip with Adventure Tours, using The Adventure Centre (TAC) as their base in Sabah.

The program emphasized personal development, which was achieved through a combination of individual and team challenges and adventures, while giving students the opportunity to experience the local culture and geography. In addition, ASHK students engaged in community service activities, where they assisted with the construction of a covered seating area for a sports pitch at Rangalau Lama village school, and repainted part of the school that was suffering from the effects of extreme tropical weather.

We are very proud of our 2017 Middle School students as they represent the first group to participate in a “Week Without Walls” trip!

ASHK’S FELLOW INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS COMPLETE SECOND SUCCESSFUL STANFORD SUMMER

Students from American School Hong Kong's sister schools in the Esol Education network have recently returned from a successful summer trip with Stanford Pre-collegiate International Institutes. Marking the second year of Esol Education’s collaboration with Stanford University, which is ranked as one of the top three universities in the world, the 2017 cohort comprised 25 students traveling from Esol’s international schools in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Cairo and Nicosia, accompanied by chaperones.

The students participated in the two-week program designed to introduce them to a US college education, where they experienced college-level classes conducted by expert educators selected by Stanford University. The program content also included field trips, excursions and multi-cultural projects.

We enjoyed following our fellow students’ journey to San Francisco, with daily updates being posted via social media channels and emails. They reported this to be one of the best experiences of their senior years and in line with ASHK’s journey towards becoming one of the leading international schools in Hong Kong, we look forward to joining the cohort in the coming years as we grow to include our own middle and high school in Hong Kong.

Esol Education and ASHK Establish Collaboration with Stanford University
Monday, April 11, 2016

We are pleased to announce that Esol Education has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Stanford University in the United States that will eventually provide ASHK students with an outstanding opportunity to take part in Stanford Pre-Collegiate International Institutes.

The Stanford Pre-Collegiate International Institutes offer two-week residential courses, labs and workshops for academically talented and motivated high school students. The workshops draw on a range of subjects taught in the Stanford Faculties of Humanities, Science, Engineering, Medicine, and Business. Students who participate in the program will share their interests and abilities with other international students and all will be given opportunities to enrich and accelerate their academic pursuits. "This is an exciting step forward for our organization," shared John Jalsevac, ASHK School Director. "By focusing on communication, creativity and innovation, the programs at Stanford are a natural extension to the STEAM focus at ASHK."

An additional benefit for participants is to experience the academic and social aspects of American college life and culture at Stanford University, ranked as one of the top 5 universities in the world. All participants will stay in Stanford dormitories. Weekend field trips will include visits to UC Berkeley, Golden Gate Park, Monterey, and other San Francisco Bay Area and Silicon Valley neighborhoods and landmarks. Students will also learn about the US college admissions process and about resources and services available to international students at US universities.

As part of the agreement, ASHK students will be part of the Esol Education worldwide cohort, traveling to Stanford in groups of up to 40 with chaperones who assist in their arrival and provide support in residential life. The students have the opportunity to meet and bond with others who share their intellectual interests and vision to advance their education in the US.

Highlighting this as a key development for future ASHK students, Mr. Jalsevac said, "Although availability to the program is a few years away from ASHK’s first cohort, we are pleased to be part of this progressive and innovative collaboration that Esol Education has established with Stanford University, and are looking forward to providing our students this unique opportunity to participate in a world class program."
